König Fußball! – Ready for World Cup 2018

So, finally, the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will start today! Just a few hours to go. Being a football (or soccer) enthusiast I am very excited. Still having a lot of fond memories of the last World Cup. Especially for me as a German 😉

In Germany, there is a huge football culture. The German Football Association (Deutscher Fußball-Bund; DFB) is one of the biggest (individual) sport federations in the world with over 7 million members and almost 25,000 associated clubs. So there is a lot of football and there are also a lot of supporters in club competitions. But when there is an European Championship or even more a World Cup you can see a huge increase of people interested in football. Almost everyone have something to show his or her affection to the German national team. Like shirts, flags, scarves and even makeup.

Since 2006 (the World Cup in Germany) there are a lot of huge screens in public places like squares, parks and even stadiums. In German it is called Public Viewing, curiously enough. The biggest area for “Public Viewing” is the place in front of the Brandenburger Tor.

One curiosity in Germanys history in football are the official World Cup Songs of 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, and finally 1994. They were made with the participation of the players of the German national team! So you can hear them actually singing!! The first one from 1974 (the first World Cup hold in Germany) is called “Fußball ist unser Leben” (football is our life) and till today you can hear it.

♪♫ Fußball ist unser Leben, denn König Fußball regiert die Welt.

Wir kämpfen und geben alles, bis dann ein Tor nach dem anderen fällt.[…] ♫♪

The other ones are quite interesting too ;). So there is a huge football tradition in Germany, especially for World Cups like in Russia 2018. If you want to know more about football in Germany and talk about it you can join my conversation clases.

Well, there is only one way to end this post. Enjoy the World Cup! Till next time 🙂
